Eloise Plunkett award

Institution of Civil Engineers
Guidance for QUEST Eloise Plunkett award

This award is to be made in memory of Eloise Plunkett, a young civil engineer with a passion for travel and civil engineering, who tragically died in 2002.

Objective

An annual award of up to £1500 will be available to a UK-based newly qualified female Civil Engineer (Member or Technician class), for travel outside the UK that has a civil engineering focus and ideally takes an innovative or unusual approach. The award will be available from 2006.

Eligibility

All female members who have qualified as a Member or Technician through a UK-based professional review in the Spring and Autumn UK Interviews each year.

How to apply The proposal should be submitted on the QUEST Eloise Plunkett Award form and give details of the travel arrangements and a description of the civil engineering focus, the objectives and activity.

Criteria
  • The activity must be outside the UK
  • It should preferably exhibit an innovative or unusual approach which demonstrates originality and is fun
  • On completion, it will motivate the recipient in their future career and be of interest to other members of the ICE

Examples might include visiting a civil engineering 'wonder of the world' or finding out at first hand about a great civil engineering feat overseas, and learning from this to inspire and motivate the recipient's future civil engineering career.

Application process

Deadline for applications is 13 February 2006.

Applications will be considered in March by a representative of the benefactor and the ICE QUEST Committee. Their decision will be final and feedback to individuals who are unsuccessful will not be given.

An award will be made to the applicant of the proposal which in their view best fulfils the objectives of the Award. The award will normally be made by 30 April.

The successful recipient will be required to commence the activity during the year of the award and to submit a report on the outcome within 3 months of their return to the UK, or within 3 months of completion of the activity should they not return to the UK.

The report of between 500-1000 words should focus on both the engineering aspects as well as the travel and inspirational elements of the trip made.

It is not an absolute requirement of this award that the recipient is undertaking civil engineering related employment during their award activity.
